MOGADISHU- Amnesty International has called on the Kenyan government to arrest Jubbaland Security Minister Abdirashid Janan and hand him over to Somalia for prosecution.
“The Kenyan authorities must immediately arrest and hand him over to the Federal Government of Somalia, who should conduct his trial in a manner that that meets international fair trial standards, without any further delays,” Amnesty International Deputy Deputy director for Eastern African said.
Victims of his alleged crimes have waited patiently for justice and their hopes must not be frustrated, the campaign group said.
Amnesty’s remarks follows reports that Janan arrived in Nairobi late last week after escaping from custody in Mogadishu where he was facing charges.
Amnesty also urged Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe not to shield Janan from prosecution.
In a statement following Janan’s arrest last August, Amnesty said the Jubbaland minister was culpable of human rights crimes for offenses committed during his tenure as a district commissioner in Gedo region.
