Prominent Somali-Canadian journalist among the dead in terrorist attack in Kismayo


SomalilandPress —Two journalists was among a number of people killed Friday when gunmen stormed As-Aseey hotel in Kismayo in an hours-long attack that reportedly began with a suicide bomber detonating a vehicle loaded with explosives.

According to Associated Press at least 10 people confirmed dead. The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab extremist group, which often targets hotels, claimed responsibility for the attack. 

Those killed include prominent Canadian journalist Hodan Naleeye, local officials confirmed Hiiraan Online. Hodan Nalayeh is the founder and host of Integration TV , an English TV show that focused on issues facing Somali diaspora as they integrate in to their respective communities.

The exact number of people killed is yet to be confimed as the gun battle still underway. The jubaland adminstration forces are still surrounding the hotel.
